How to create beautiful containers

Pots and containers are a great way to brighten up your outdoor space; whether it be a large patio area, or a small balcony, it's easy to add lots of colour and interest.

Below, Carolyn has noted her top tips for planting a container to be proud of:

 1. Use a good quality compost suitable for the type of plants you want to grow. For example, for a rhododendron or pieris use ericaceous.

2. Add water retaining granules and slow release fertiliser to help reduce watering and ensure your plants are fed all season long.

3. Make sure you use the right plants for the location of the container. For example, sunny or shady conditions.

4. Choose colours that complement or contrast each other, or create a container of all one colour like white with variegated foliage colours for interest.

We've got some excellent plant offers on just now at Pentland. Our high quality homegrown packs of bedding plants are currently only £3.49 each, or 4 for £12.

Gardening tips for March

Spring is just around the corner. The days are now getting longer, the ground is getting warmer and bulbs are starting to come up. It’s time for the gardening season to begin.

There are plenty of jobs around the garden, which if started now, will help the months ahead run more smoothly. So here are a few of our gardening suggestions for this month to help you on your way.

It's time to start your spring cleaning

Fork over the soil in your borders, weed and mulch, dig up and divide any overcrowded perennials.

Tidy up your paths and driveways by removing weeds and moss.

If it’s dry enough, mow your lawn and redefine the edges.

Tidy up roses and rock gardens, and fill any gaps with new plants.

Freshen up your pots and containers (Don’t forget to wipe away any muddy rain splashes, and top up the compost).

Sow wildflowers and start planting your spring bedding pants, flowering spring bulbs and compact perennials.

Our flat whites have had a revamp!

We're always looking at new ways to offer our customers the very best at Cafe Panola, and this includes our coffee too! With expert help from Brodies of Edinburgh, we've revamped our flat whites, so they're now made using a double ristretto. Ristretto is a shorter shot of Coffee than espresso with the normal amount of coffee, but half the amount of water. It is more intense and has a sweeter flavour when made into a flat white! We've all tried and tested it here at Pentland Plants and it was unanimously given the thumbs up!! We're sure you'll love it as much as we do.
