June gardening tips

June is an exciting time in the garden when all of the big, blowsy flowers start appearing. With the warmer weather, you can really start to enjoy the summer colour from your beds, pots, containers and hanging baskets. If you haven’t planted yours yet – we have a fantastic range of our homegrown plants to add the finishing touches to your garden this summer.

As for the rest of the garden, here are a few key jobs for the garden this June to help ensure it’s looking its best.

Deadhead plants and regularly water and feed containers & hanging baskets. Make sure you keep newly planted trees, shrubs, perennials and rock plants watered in dry spells while they get established.

Mow your lawn often and feed the grass with a liquid lawn feed if you feel it needs a bit of a green-up.

Propogate shrubs and roses by taking softwood cuttings, and prune training, climbing and rambling roses.

Pinch dead flowerheads carefully from plants and tidy up perennials once they’ve finished flowering.

Perenials will help to keep weeds down, but continue removing the unwanted ones as they appear.

Now’s the time to clip any fast growing hedges to keep them looking neat and tidy.

If you’ve got a veggie patch, this month you should be looking to sow things like lettuce, rocket, spring onion, radish, oriental leaves like pak choi and chinese cabbage, maincrop carrots, peas, swedes sweetcorn. French and runner beans, courgettes, squashes and pumpkins.

During the dry/warmer weather, keep any fruit trees and bushes well watered.

If you need any advice or inspiration for your garden, please just ask a member of our knowledgeable team. You’ll find them in the annex or outdoor plant area at the garden centre and they’ll be more than happy to assist.
